Toshihiro Oshiro
born May 1, 1949

Born in Okinawa on May 1, 1949, Toshihiro Oshiro began the study of Karate as a child. He first trained under Masao Shima and eventually trained and taught at the Naha dojo of Shoshin Nagamine (founder of Matsubayashi-Ryu, student of Ankichi Arakaki, Chotoku Kyan and Choki Motobu). He also studied Karate under Chokei Kishaba, as well as Yamanni Chinen-Ryu Bojutsu under Chogi Kishaba (student of Masami Chinen and Chojun Miyagi, founder of the Goju-Ryu form of Karate).

Chokei Kishaba's instructors included Sensei Hohan Soken (Matsumura Seito Shorin-Ryu, student of Nabe Matsumura), as well as Shoshin Nagamine and Seigi Nakamura. He was the founder of the Okinawa Karate-Do Shorin Ryu Kishaba Juku.

Another student of the Kishaba brothers in Okinawa is Katsuhiko Shinzato.

Oshiro moved to the United States in 1979 and eventually opened a dojo in California. His Oshiro's Karate Dojo is located in San Mateo, California, just south of San Francisco. He has popularized the Yamanni Chinen-ryu form of bojutsu, and has taught seminars in Hawaii for Kiyohisa Hirano's Japan International Karate Center. Many students can now be seen performing Yamanni Chinen-Ryu bo and Ryukyu Kobudo sai kata at Hawaii events.

A wealth of information about Oshiro can be found at the website of his Oshiro's Karate Dojo. He has produced excellent videos that are available at Tsunami Video:
